Chhattisgarh polls: Over 1.30 cr votes to decide BJP, Cong’s fate today

Raipur, December 07
After spending 18 tensed days in claims and rebuttals to form government in Chhattisgarh, the BJP and Congress are keeping their fingers crossed and keenly waiting for break of the dawn on Sunday when counting of 1,30, 11,622 votes will ascertain who deserves to rule and who does not.
Desperate to create history in State, both BJP and Congress have projected their own set of magical numbers to grab power, however, the record 77% turnout in 90 assembly constituencies implies that there will be neck and neck tussle between the two parties.
The counting will commence at 8 am in 110 counting halls in 27 district headquarters on Sunday. The counting for 70 out of 90 constituencies will be done in one hall each while remaining 20 constituencies in two halls each. There will be 1375 counting tables, i.e. 14 tables each for 90 constituencies except Manendragarh where number of tables will be seven.
The counting will begin with postal ballot papers. The Election Commission had issued 70,900 postal ballot papers this time and has reportedly received 55,000 votes. The postal votes will be received till Sunday morning. There will be one table for every 500 postal votes.
The counting of votes locked in 22,158 electronic voting machines (EVMs) will start thirty minutes after commencement of postal vote counting. There will be 1375 counting supervisor, counting assistant and micro-observer each while number of general observers will be 90.
There were total 985 candidates in fray in two rounds of polls held on November 11 and 19. The number of women candidates was 85. The number of candidates from recognised national political parties was 301, registered political parties 330 and others 269. The constituency with highest number of candidates was Raipur City South from where 38 were in fray while Konta had minimum candidates, i.e. four.
The joint chief electoral officer DD Singh informed that data centre had been established in all 27 district headquarters and updated counting information to EC would be sent through date genesis software.
The EC will engage about 5500 staff in counting process besides pressing 14 companies for security at counting spots.
