Cong’s membership drive failed to woo rural youths

Raipur, June 01, 2010

The membership campaign of Congress has failed to attract youngsters in the rural pockets. Even the Congress leaders admit that the party needed an effective strategy to expand its domain in the villages. According to information, the proportion of youths joining the party was more in the urban areas as compared to the ones dwelling in the rural belts.
The senior leaders, who looked concerned with party’s loosening grip in rural areas, said that the party ruled the nation for over fifty years owing to its wide presence in villages. The PCC, too, was hoping to earn appreciation from the AICC by enlisting large number of new members through the drive before party’s organisation polls.
The figures of newly inducted members through the campaign in the districts like Raipur, Durg, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, Korba and Raigarh apparently indicate that the party completely failed to encash ‘Rahul factor’ (AICC general Secretary Rahul Gandhi), who brought an attitudinal shift in Congress by rechristening the ‘party of olds’ into ‘the party of youths’.
The state Congress was supposed to accrue its existing member list by five lakh, but eventually it exhausted at 4,41,185 new entrants. Still, there remained a whopping deficit of 58,815.
The party leaders say that the figures could have been glittering and rather doubled if the High Command would not have made it mandatory for all the state Congress units to take photograph of the new members. “The epic story of Congress begins from rural pockets and AICC supremo Sonia Gandhi and charismatic Rahul Gandhi have attempted to sustain this tempo. However, we have failed to cope with this pace owing to which our mandate is sharply falling in rural Chhattisgarh,” said the party leaders.
They, however, expressed their satisfaction that the new member-list did not contain any member which usually happened earlier when photograph of new entrant was not compulsory. “At least the wrong trend is no more prevalent now. With new guidelines, no leader can pay the membership fee himself and produce a fake list of new members as he had to necessarily provide photographs of each of them,” said the party leaders.
The population of Raipur (Urban) is about 12 lakh while Raipur (Rural) is nearly 28 lakh. A comparative study reveals surprising facts that Congress is gradually debilitating in rural areas. According to latest data, the party inducted 30,400 new members in Raipur (Urban) and 51,264 in Raipur (Rural) that shows that Congress could not get much response in villages.
The party is further concerned on its zero impact in the naxal-hit areas. According to information, there are number of blocks in the naxal belts where the Congress could not even induct single member. The party leaders that such areas where Congress had no presence put a big question mark on the democratic method of Organisational elections as who would be contest for the block president and office-bearers.

The result of membership drive in different districts was:

Raipur (Urban) - 30,400
Raipur (Rural) – 51,264
Durg (Urban) – 10,375
Durg (Rural) – 64,832

Kawardha – 10,949
Jagdalpur (Urban) – 12,650
Bastar – 17,900
Kanker – 10,625
Dantewada – 4668
Janjgir – 30,150
