Patel for judicial probe into Sitapur lathicharge incident

Raipur, October 06, 2012

PCC president Nandkumar Patel has demanded judicial probe into police lathicharge on Congress workers and locals in Sitapur for staging dharna against road-widening project on Saturday.

“We strongly condemn the repressive action taken by the police against the activists who were protesting peacefully in favour of their demand. This proves that the BJP government is resorting to repressive actions in frustration,” Patel said.

“The Congress workers and local residents were protesting at national highway. Earlier, they had demanding road widening up to 35 feet on either side of the existing road from the middle as was proposed by nagar panchayat Sitapur. However, when the local administration refused to accept their demand, they staged dharna,” he informed.

“The police suddenly started lathicharge on protestors without giving prior warning to them. About 12 citizens got severely injured while the condition of six is said to be critical. The police also thrashed Congress MLA Amarjeet Bhagat and other senior party leaders,” he said.

“We want judicial probe into the matter and the guilty should be punished,” he added.
