Chhattisgarh polls: Two IEDs defused ahead of Sonia, Modi rallies

Raipur, November 07
Security forces on Thursday defused two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) weighing 50 kg in Sukma district under Bastar division ahead of rallies of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and BJP leader Narendra Modi in the tribal-populated region.
The two massive explosives were detected by joint squad of CRPF and Chhattisgarh police on the Dornapal-Jagargunda raod near Chintalnar under Sukma district while conducting an area domination exercise. The two bombs weighed 25 kg each and were kept in steel cases and concealed beneath the road.
Notably, the union home ministry had already alerted Chhattisgarh government of possible naxal attack in Bastar region in the first fortnight of November. Recently, Maoist leader Ganapathy was also spotted in the jungles of Aboojhmaad area where the ultras had laid ambush and killed 76 CRPF personnel in 2010.
On Centre’s inputs, the State police and intelligence department was keeping hawk’s eye in Bastar. The security was heightened in the region ahead of visit of BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi, and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to participate in poll campaigning.
While Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to address a rally in Kanker on Friday (November 8), PM Manmohan Singh will reach Raipur on November 9 to address workers’ rally.
