State handicraft sector needs branding: Pandey

Raipur, February 07, 2011

Handicraft is a promising sector in Chhattisgarh and it requires proper branding and marketing to expand beyond the state boundaries. The words were expressed by BJP national secretary and Durg Parliamentarian Saroj Pandey during the inaugural session of workshop organised by Chhattisgarh State Handicraft Development and Marketing Federation Limited (CSHDMFL) on Monday.
“There is huge demand of state’s handicraft items not only in India but also in foreign countries but their cost is too low owing to which the sector is not sustaining. Besides, the handicraft sector lacks packaging and goods finishing which can be added advantage in selling the items at competitive prices,” Pandey said.
She hoped that the changes in handicraft and cottage industries in the state would benefit the craftsmen. Still, she felt that the quality factor in the handicraft sector should be given prime importance for its successful branding at national and international arena.
She further emphasised on effective implementation of schemes and projects launched for craftsmen. She also pointed that proactive measures should be taken to check the recurring problems in the sector so that the craftsmen expert in different works including tattoo, tribal art from Bastar, etc could develop their unique image across the nation.
Referring to the discussion in Lok Sabha regarding handicraft sector and its promotion, Pandey suggested that the state should organise national level symposiums and exhibition in handicrafts to establish its brand image.
On the occasion, the chairman of CSHDMFL Kamal Lal Dewangan and office-bearers of different committees of craftsmen were present.
