Corruption galore in AMC, alleges Singhdeo

Raipur, May 11, 2011

The Congress legislator from Ambikapur TS Singhdeo has complained to Governor Shekhar Dutt that corruption prevailed in majority of the departments of Ambikapur Municipal Corporation (AMC) owing to which development works in the city had been severely affected. In this connection, he submitted a memorandum to the Governor along with 10000 signatures of Ambikapur residents on Tuesday and demanded probe in the alleged corruption cases surfaced in the AMC.
He informed that the chemicals used in fogging machines to check kill mosquitoes were purchased at higher rate owing to which the AMC incurred loss of about Rs 30-40 lakh. Similarly, to purchase high mast lights, the AMC finalised the highest bidder instead of the one who quoted lowest rates, he said. “Ironically, the AMC asked the same highest bidder to supply additional high mast lights after sometime,” he added.
He sniffed huge irregularities in small tendering procedures. “According to Municipal Act, the municipal corporations must invitee bids if they want to purchase items worth over Rs 10000, but the AMC was not following this rule,” he said.
He further indicated that the AMC had not even constituted finance committee according to Municipal Act owing to which the corporation’s exchequer was being misused frequently.
“Besides, nepotism dominates appointment procedures in AMC as about 717 posts were filled without considering the eligibility criteria of the candidates. This has put additional salary burden of Rs two crore on the AMC annually,” he said.
He said the water and property tax hike done by the AMC too had irked the people of Ambikapur and they want rollback in the decisions.
He informed the Governor that he had also raised the issue of corruption in AMC at state Assembly, but the government did not take any initiative.
