Union Secretary: Write info about MNREGA labourers on walls

Raipur, May 03, 2011

The information about labourers working under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) should be written on walls in the villages where the works are being carried out. The information must contain names of the labourers and the number of days they get work in a calendar year. The Union Secretary for Panchayat and Rural Development Department BK Sinha gave these directives to the officials of state’s Panchayat and Rural Development Department while he was inspecting the progress of renovation and beautification of 50-year-old pond in village Farfaud in Arang development block (Raipur district) on Tuesday.

On the spot, while interacting with labourers, Sinha inspected their job cards and inquired about monthly status of their payments. Some of the labourers informed Sinha that an individual receives Rs 122 per day under MNREGA and the payment is being done through post office located in the village.
He urged the labourers to take part in social auditing and gram sabhas to make the MNREGA more effective. He learnt that the social auditing of MNREGA works in village Farfaud would be done on May 14.
The sarpanch of the village Himmat Singh Chandrakar informed that about 600 labourers were engaged for the pond renovation works and half of the task had already been achieved. The pond renovation will be done at the cost of Rs 50 lakh and the water would be filled in it through the branch canal of Gangrel dam.
