Conditions of rain-hit areas better than past years: Mayor

Raipur, July 26

Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak has claimed that the conditions
of rain-hit areas of the capital were better than previous years.
“Earlier the low-lying areas would remain submerged after heavy and
incessant rains, but the scenario has completely changed this year and
water smoothly drains out from these places because of the municipal’s
intense sanitation drive before monsoon,” Nayak said while she was
reviewing the arrangements made by the civic administration during
rainy season like proper drainage in the city besides the role played
by disaster management cell in the aftermath of heavy showers.
Nayak said although the sanitation drive prior to rains brought
anticipated result in the low-lying areas, but the problem of
waterlogging in some places still loomed large because of
encroachments over nullahs and drains that are hampering regular
cleaning works. She asked the zone commissioners to remove all such
illegal occupants from their areas launching anti-encroachment drive.
She further asked the officials to make the phone numbers of central
disaster management cell as well as its zonal branches besides flood
relief cell at fire station. She instructed the officials to purchase
all the essential items required for rescue operations in flooded
areas to avoid any panic.
She asked the officials to provide 70 sanitation workers to the
disaster management cell and prepare their duty chart in three shifts
during the entire rainy season.
