Congress on Tuesday expressed its deep concern over increasing suicidal cases of farmers with the most recent being the suicide of farmer Ranjeet Ram from the district’s Sakripar area.
“The entire state is shell shocked by the suicide of Ram who had to pay Rs 1.50 lakh interest on merely Rs 8000 loan. More importantly, the loan was provided one of the family members of Pradeep Gandhi, the person who is close to Chief Minister Raman Singh and had once been his representative when the latter was parliamentarian,” said PCC president Nandkumar Patel and CLP leader Ravindra Choubey.
“In fact, farmers of Dongargaon, Ambagarh Chowki and nearby places are terrified by Gandhi and his kin Dinesh who is Rajnandgaon zila panchayat president from BJP as the duo provide loans to them. Intimidated by the Gandhis these farmers are on verge of committing suicide,” they alleged.
They informed that the several farmers had lodged complaint with the Dongargaon and Dautola police against Gandhis but in vain. “Some of the complaints were lodged several months back like one being registered with the police on January 21, 2012,” they said alleging that the government was protecting Gandhis.
They said the condition of farmers in entire state was pathetic as they were forced to buy duplicate pesticides, substandard fertilisers and seeds, etc.
They said the farmers were not getting loans from the banks due to anti-farmers policies of the government and therefore they were compelled to take loans from people like Gandhis. They said the farmers were being exploited by the government.
Citing example of National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) figures for Chhattisgarh in 2009-10 they pointed that about 12405 people committed suicide in the state. “About 78 percent of the state population depends on agricultural and this is a clear indicator that majority of the suicides were committed by farmers in 2009-10,” they said.
