Politics brew over name of Kelo dam

Cong wants it to be named after Ramkumar Agrawal

Raipur, June 14, 2012

With Kelo dam in Raigarh district being dedicated to public by Chief Minister Raman Singh and former BJP president Rajnath Singh Thursday, the Congress has strongly demanded from government to name the new dam after freedom fighter and social worker late Ramkumar Agrawal – the man who fought hard to bring the project into practical reality for benefit of farmers.
PCC president Nandkumar Patel says that if the BJP government can name incomplete Raigarh medical college after late Lakhiram Agrawal then why cannot it name Kelo dam after Ramkumar Agrawal and respect the public sentiments.
He alleged that Raigarh medical college was named after late Lakhiram Agrawal just because he was a BJP leader and farther of Health Minister Amar Agrawal while Ramkumar Agrawal was ignored because he had no link to BJP.
“This is sheer partiality. While Lakhiram Agrawal was qualified to his organisational dedication, Ramkumar Agrawal struggled for farmers, labourers, dalits and exploited section of the society throughout his life,” he said.
He informed that Ramkumar Agrawal initiated movement for Kelo dam back in 1962 through signature and post card campaigns. “He also did foot march and staged court arrest demanding quick construction of dam on river Kelo,” Patel said.
He also expressed his doubt over pre-public dedication of Kelo dam – the project which is scheduled to complete in next one and a half year.
“It is really interesting to see that the government hastened in dedicating the incomplete dam to the public. While the government seems diffident over its position in next 18 months, we doubt that this project would complete in the given time period,” said Patel.
He said even the Raigarh medical college is unlikely to complete in scheduled time, i.e. 2013.
