Farmers getting substandard fertilisers: Congress

Raipur, June 25, 2012

Congress has alleged that government was providing substandard and underweight fertilisers to the farmers. “The fertilisers available in cooperative societies are of inferior quality. The fertilisers are packed in torn sacks with weight less than the claimed one. This is BJP government’s real anti-farmer face,” said Congress spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi on Monday.
He said if the societies weigh farmers’ paddy before purchasing it should also provide fertilisers after weighing before farmers.
He further alleged that the government had created artificial deficit of fertilisers with an intention to benefit black marketeers. “If the government would have stocked adequate fertilisers beforehand, the farmers had not to buy it at increased rates,” he said.
He slammed Agriculture Minister Chandrashekhar Sahu for not addressing farmers’ problems before going to foreign tour. “While the farmers are not getting standard fertilisers and seeds timely, Sahu preferred to visit abroad without obtaining permission from Centre,” he pointed.
“It is the government’s responsibility to provide standard fertilisers, seeds and pesticides at reasonable rate but unfortunately the farmers had to buy such things at high price from black marketeers. This has resulted in high production cost further debilitation of farmers’ financial condition,” he said.
He also flayed Seed Development Corporation for providing substandard seeds to the farmers. “The government is simply harassing and exploiting the farmers by supporting illegal stockists and black marketeers,” he charged.
