Cong slams Karuna remark on tribals

Raipur, June 16, 2012

Strongly objecting senior BJP leader Karuna Shukla’s remark that ‘the tribals would remain indebted to BJP for lifetime as the party has done more than enough for them’ the Congress on Saturday stingingly said that the ruling party had given nothing to the tribals except insult and had always kept them deprived of their deserved rights.
“The BJP managed to come in power twice because it got clear mandate in tribal regions but in turn this party made the life of poor tribals hell. The tribal areas still lack basic facilities like water, road, electricity, hospitals, education, etc. Moreover, the naxal menace has broken the ribs of the tribals and they are forced to migrate elsewhere,” said Congress legislators Amarjeet Bhagat, Devendra Bahadur Singh, Ambika Markam and Ramdayal Uike.
“If the BJP government had felt the pulse of tribals then it would not have killed innocent tribal girl Meena Khalkhon in fake encounter. More than 10000 tribal girls are missing from the state but Chief Minister Raman Singh is silent over the issue. About 1000 houses of tribals were destroyed in Bastar but the government remained unmoved. How can this government be sensitive towards tribals,” they asked.
They said if the government claimed to be tribal-friendly then why it was not giving appropriate quota to tribals according their population in the state. “With fair bit of quota, children of about 5000 tribal families would have been in government jobs presently,” they added.
They pointed that the police had relentlessly lathicharged on tribals at Raipur when they took peaceful rally in favour of their demand of constitutional rights. “The police did not even spare the old tribal participants in the rally and threw them into jail on false charges,” they alleged.
They said the tribal populated region lack peace due to non-existence of the government and omnipresence of Maoists. “The schemes and projects being run for scheduled tribes have been launched under their constitutional rights and are not the BJP’s charity as it claims,” they added.
