Cong concerned over rise in human trafficking cases

Raipur, May 15, 2013

Expressing its concern over rise in human trafficking cases in state’s tribal regions, Congress has slammed the government for failing to protect tribal women and children.

“More than 10000 tribal girls are missing from the state. In over nine and a half years the state witnessed incidents like tribal girls being sold, raped and exploited. However, the government did nothing to check these incidents,” said former leader of the opposition at state Vidhan Sabha Mahendra Karma, deputy CLP leader Rampukar Singh, MLAs Bodhram Kanwar, Shiv Netam and other tribal leaders on Wednesday.

“Recently, the girls in Jashpur fall prey to human traffickers. They were sold to other states. About 18 months back, an 18-year-old girl from village Tapkara (Jashpur district) was sold at Punjabi Bagh in New Delhi. She somewhat managed to escape and return home. In Jashpur district alone, 55 women and 26 girls are missing for the past three years. This shows how serious is the government and police administration towards human trafficking cases,” they said.

“It is an irony that the government is taking out vikas yatra and making empty claims of development in state in backdrop of girls being sold from Jashpur, Sarguja, Bastar and remote tribal areas in country’s metropolitan cities,” they added.

Besides, they said, the tribals lost their lands to capitalists via brokers in two terms of BJP government. “The tribals are deprived of everything from land, to forests to water due to government’s indifferent attitude towards them,” they added.

“The government is completely responsible for human trafficking of tribal girls and it would have to face the consequence in the upcoming assembly polls,” they said.
