Why Pushp Steel felled trees sans lease, asks Cong

Raipur, May 17, 2013

Reacting to government clarifications on its May 16 disclosure on Pushp Steel case, Congress on Friday said if the particular company did not get lease then how come it fell over 17000 trees.

“The BJP government seems frightened of continuous disclosures on Pushp Steel and hence is giving false statements,” said Congress general secretary Bhupesh Baghel and party’s chief spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi.

The duo pointed that even the forest minister Vikram Usendi had admitted in state assembly that the government gave approval to Push Steel to cut trees.

“The minister in his reply to a starred question of Congress MLA Bhajan Singh Nirankari during Vidhan Sabha’s budget session on March 7, 2013 said that Pushp Steel was given permission to chop 17363 trees under certain conditions of government of India,” they said.

“The minister further said that trees would be cut when there will not be any option and it would be done under strict supervision of forest department,” they added.

They asked how come Pushp Steel got approval to fell trees without obtaining mining lease and prospecting licence. “Either the forest minister lied in Vidhan Sabha or the government is resorting to canard to save the CM’s face in Push Steel case,” they said.

They asked the government to stop giving false statements and hand over Pushp Steel case to CBI for probe.
