Cong hails SC notice to NHAI, others on toll plaza

Raipur, May 08, 2013

Congress business cell on Wednesday hailed Supreme Court notice to National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Chhattisgarh government, state’s public works department (PWD) and DS Construction on toll plaza issue.

The cell’s president Kanhaiyya Agrawal informed that a petition had been filed by him, Nishchay Bajpayee and Ashok Shivhare in the apex court regarding shifting of toll plaza from Ring Road No 1 near Sundar Nagar at Raipur.

The cell, along with locals, has been protesting toll plaza construction at the current selected site for the past several months.

In this connection, the cell members have gheraoed NHAI and DS Construction – the implementing agency hired by NHAI to construct fourlane road from Tatibandh to Arang several times in the past.

The cell wants the toll plaza to be shifted outside Raipur’s municipal limits. The cell says existing toll plaza site is illegal and against the highway construction norms.

The cell alleges that considering heavy traffic flow at Ring Road No 1 and several residential colonies being developed in either side of the fourlane road, the DS Construction wanted to build toll plaza near Sundar Nagar to earn additional profit by charging toll on local motorists.

Earlier, the implementing agency had selected toll plaza site near Sarona but was compelled to cancel the location due to massive protest of locals and interference of local MLA and housing and environment minister Rajesh Munat.

The DS Construction then picked the site near Deendayal Upadhyay Nagar at Ring Road No 1. However, it had to buckle down before the public protest again.

The cell intensified its protest movement when the implementing agency selected toll plaza site near Sundar Nagar. In this connection, the cell had also submitted memorandum to chief secretary Sunil Kumar who too said that toll plaza should be out of city limits.
