Congress has asked the government to issue white paper on income and
expenditures of Chhattisgarh state power distribution company limited (CSPDCL).
“The people want to know how CSPDCL is running at loss when Chhattisgarh is a
power surplus state,” said Congress spokesperson Sushil Anand Shukla on Thursday.
“There
are abundant coal and water in state, however, the people are getting
electricity at higher rate,” he said.
“Not
long ago when the government had hiked power tariff inordinately and then it raised
power tariff by Rs 15-20 paise per unit on name of variable cost adjustment
(VCA) recently. Now it wants to increase the electricity rates again. This is
injustice to power consumers,” he added.
He
said despite protest the energy secretary and CSPDCL’s managing director were defending
the government on proposed power tariff hike.
He
asked chief minister Raman Singh, who is also holding energy portfolio, to
clarify why Chhattisgarh state electricity regulatory commission (CSERC)
organised public hearing on Thursday when the government did not intend to
increase electricity rates.
“The
CSERC conducts public hearing when energy department and the power company send
it proposal to hike power tariff. If no proposal was sent to the commission
then why it invited claims and objections through public hearing,” he asked.
He
said that power company was running at loss due to its exploitation by some of
the influential persons in the government. He said another reason for CSPDCL’s
loss was uncontrolled expenditures and grafts prevailed in it.
