Sharply reacting to BJP parliamentarian Saroj Pandey’s remark on ordinance on food security bill, Congress on Thursday said the saffron party was severely frustrated by the ordinance as it feared massive political loss if the law on food security comes into effect under UPA regime. Pandey, on July 10, termed the ordinance as Congress ploy to secure votes.
“The BJP is least bothered about poor and weaker section. It is more concerned about political loss and hence it is objecting the ordinance,” said Congress spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi.
He said the BJP was scared of being exposed as its Chhattisgarh government was distributing rice to poor at low rate after getting grants from Centre.
He said the state government simply made Food Security Act but did not implement it. He challenged the government to implement all the provision under the Act if it really intended to benefit the poor. He advised Pandey to ask her government to bring the Act to practical reality instead of making policies in papers.
“On the other hand, the Congress-led UPA government, by bringing ordinance on food security bills, has proved that it is committed to benefit the common man. The Congress, in its 2009 election manifesto, had promised the citizens to give them food security. Now, by bringing ordinance on food security bill, it has fulfilled its promise,” he said.
He pointed that after providing employment to the poor under MNREGA the Centre would now give them food once the law on food security comes into effect.
He said Food Security Act would become third most significant achievement of the UPA government after implementation of Right to Education and (RTE) and Right to Information (RTI).
He said the UPA government tabled the food security bill in Lok Sabha on December 22, 2011 and then in February 2013 but on the both the occasions the principal opposition BJP, despite giving assurances, did not cooperate in debating on it.
