Proposed amendment bill on agri lands anti-farmer: Cong

Raipur, July 10, 2013

A day after the state Cabinet decided to table amendment bill to revise land revenue code in assembly’s upcoming monsoon session, the Congress termed the bill as anti-farmer and advantageous for land and farm mafias.

“Through this decision the government is pretending that it is a well-wisher of farmers but once the law comes into effect, the latter would be at loss,” said Congress spokesperson Sushil Anand Shukla.
He alleged that the government wanted to table amendment bill to protect industrialists and farm mafias, not farmers. “If the farmer would wish to sell his land, it would be difficult for him to prove that the buyer is also a farmer,” Shukla said.

“According to amended bill, the government can forcibly acquire farmers’ lands for industrialists but the farmers would not be allowed to sell their lands directly to the industrialists. In this case, the farmers will never get fair market value of their lands,” he pointed.
“If the government really intends to benefit the farmers then it should fix minimum rate of agriculture land to sell industrialists and allow the latter to sell their lands above this minimum rate to industrialists,” he said.

He further charged that the crop area in state was rapidly shrinking due to government’s anti-farmer policies. “The government should check this but not putting the farmers at loss,” he said.

“The government first forcibly acquired farmers’ lands for industrialists and then made them slaves. When it faced resistance from all corners, it decided to bring amendment bill to deceive farmers,” he said.
