Survey report only criterion to pick poll candidates: Mahant

Says he is not in race for CM post

State Congress has decided to wholly adopt its national vice president Rahul Gandhi’s formula as for the first time, it will distribute tickets for assembly polls not on the basis of applications and recommendations, but on grounds of survey report that will be conducted to identify potential winning candidate. The party will also announce list of candidates at least three months before polls. 

“There will be only one criterion to select an appropriate contestant for Vidhan Sabha elections and that will be survey report,” said Union minister of state for agriculture and food processing industries Charandas Mahant while talking to scribes at New Circuit House on Saturday.

Mahant, who has recently held brisk meetings with PCC president Nandkumar Patel and CLP leader Ravindra Choubey after state assembly’s budget session pertaining to party’s 2013 poll strategies, made it evident that he was not in race for chief minister’s post as he would not contest assembly polls. 

“The party will rather go on polls under united leadership and not project any particular face for CM,” he said.  

On Congress parivartan rally to be commenced from April 12 he said the party would go to people and inform them about grafts prevailed in government departments. He said the rally would be apt reply to the ruling party for ignoring people of Chhattisgarh.

Claiming that the Congress would succeed in checking BJP’s winning streak he said the senior party leaders were coordinating well with each other as well as with workers for it.

On CAG revelations he said the state government’s wrong policies were to be blamed for it. He demanded CBI inquiry into the irregularities pointed by CAG so that guilty officials could be punished. 

When asked that Congress had dragged health minister Amar Agrawal’s name in Bhadoura land scam, he said his party did not intend to target any one person, but rather aimed to expose all scams of BJP government one-by-one. “For this, the Congress will aggressively launch a movement against the government.”he said.

When pointed that the state’s crop production had increased despite shrinking crop area, Mahant said it happened due to Centre’s specific project framed for seven states including Chhattisgarh. “By far, Punjab and Haryana were highest crop producers but with Centre’s new project, the crop production in other states too has increased,” he said.

On Kanker rape incident he said he had submitted his report to the Centre and even a team from New Delhi had conducted probed into the matter. 

On recent rail projects approved for Chhattisgarh he said it happened not due to state government’s efforts, but because of Centre’s intention to expand rail services in the state. He said the state government had also demanded a rail project linking CM Raman Singh’s hometown Kawardha but the Centre rejected it because the officials did not provide sufficient information pertaining to it.

On new schemes of his department for Chhattisgarh he said a soon a project would be commenced to increase production of vegetables, fruits and flowers.

On Nationalist Congress Party leader Nobel Verma’s entry to Congress, he hoped that all leaders would unanimously take decision on it.
