VC’s demise leaves a void in Congress

Raipur, June 11, 2013

After struggling for life for 16 days, veteran Congress leader and former union minister Vidya Charan Shukla on Tuesday eventually succumbed to bullet injuries he had sustained during naxal attack on parivartan yatra on May 25 at Jiram valley in Darbha region. The party, which was hoping that Shukla would win battle with death and come out as healthy as he was earlier, seems to be in deep trance after reports his demise. The partymen say that his demise had left a big void in the party.

Union minister of state and acting PCC president Charandas Mahant too has postponed the three significant meetings he was scheduled to convene at Congress Bhawan on June 12 and 13.

According to information, the party is also likely to extend the date to restart parivartan yatra. Just a day before Shukla’s demise, i.e. on June 10, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi had asked Mahant and CLP leader to restart yatra from Keshloor on June 16. In this connection, Gandhi had also planned to talk to DCC heads of Bastar division on June 14.

As soon as reports of Shukla’s demise flashed in news channels, his supporters started gathering at his Raipur residence – Radheshyam Bhawan. In deep anguish, they termed his demise as loss that will never be compensated in the party.

It is learnt that according to Shukla’s wish, his body will be cremated at his farm house in Raipur. His funeral is likely to be attended by party’s national leaders including Rahul Gandhi.
