Chhattisgarh demands national agri research centres

Raipur, March 06, 2012

State government has demanded from Centre to open national-level agricultural research centres in Chhattisgarh to speed up development in agriculture sector. The demand was made by state Agriculture Minister Chandrashekhar Sahu while he was addressing 83rd annual general meeting of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Society at National Agricultural Science complex at New Delhi on Tuesday.
Sahu further demanded from the Centre to open agricultural science centres in newly constituted districts of Chhattisgarh.
He felt that the Commission for Agricultural Cost and Price (CACP) needed to radically change the policy on production cost. “The CACP should first make different zones of the states according to their climatic conditions. Then on the basis of the production cost these zone, the policy should be framed,” he suggested.
Citing example of paddy production costs of Chhattisgarh and Punjab, he said the ‘big difference’ could easily be seen. “Hence, it would be unacceptable for the states if the Centre would fix uniform production cost policy for all,” he said.
Sahu also suggested that prioritisation should be given to knowledge-based agricultural expansion works instead of input distribution targets to acquire better results of second green revolution target.
He said second green revolution was possible in rain-fed agricultural regions, especially in north India for which the farmers needed proper training so that they could adopt better technology.
He advocated for formation of an integrated model of organic farming and modern farming to make agriculture sector lucrative and long-lasting.
Earlier, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries Charandas Mahant launched Cadalmin Green Algal Extract (GAe) (nutraceutical developed from seaweeds to combat joint pain and arthritic condition), Listeria monocytogenes Detection Kit (for detection in food and clinical samples), Little Millet Flakes (rich in fibre, protein and minerals) and Darbar-e-Rang (herbal eco- colours for Holi).
