Stresses on quality enhancement of higher education in state

RSU to start new course M Sc in environmental science

Governor Shekhar Dutt has appealed to state’s academic institutions to strive to acquire top hundred ranking nationally by continuously improving quality of higher education. His appeal came while he was presiding over the 21st meeting of university coordination committee (UCC) held at Rajbhavan on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by chief minister Raman Singh, chief secretary Sunil Kumar and vice chancellors of different university.

Indicating towards status of Chhattisgarh’s academic institutes in the list of top 500 institutions of India, he said only three could made their presence felt - National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur – 176th, Hidayatullah National Law University Raipur stood 201st and Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University (CSVTU) Bhilai 211th.  He felt it was high time for state’s higher educational institutions to improve their national rankings through quality enhancement.

He appreciated 20% admission rate in higher educational institutes and said the rate should increase up to 25%.

To improve higher education sector through organised planning, it was decided in the meeting to constitute a high-level committee headed by chief secretary. To increase attendance of teaching faculties in colleges located in remote areas, it was decided to provide them residential facility by constructing composite buildings in scheduled areas.

Similarly, to promote research and analysis works, the government will link academic institutes to different departments and industries.

In the meeting, the CM said one needs knowledge and skill not resources to become a global leader. He felt that universities should incorporate new courses on horticulture, agriculture, natural resources and technology so that youngsters may have wider options of employment.
New course in RSU

The Governor approved commencement of new course – M Sc in environmental science in Pt Ravishankar Shukla University (RSU). Besides, he also approved shifting of courses in geography from social science department to science department. Now, the students pursing their post graduation studies in geography will get M Sc degree instead of MA.

Guv draws attention of VCs towards 22 matters

Governor talked with VCs on 22 specific matters pertaining to varsities. The prominent matters were – issuance of grants timely, filling of vacant administrative posts, updation of courses, building trust of examinations conducted by varsities, timely announcement of exam results, regular inspection of affiliated colleges, taking effective steps to prevent ragging, conduction of courses according to requirement of local industries, making of congenial educational atmosphere for students, promotion of cultural, sports and creative activities, conduction of e-classes in remote areas to take maximum benefit of central financial succour, placement of students, timely distribution of student scholarship, security and sanitation of hostels, etc.

RSU roadmap to improve education quality presented

In the meeting, the RSU’s vice chancellor Prof SK Pandey presented varsity’s roadmap to improve education quality in academic institutes. Appreciating the roadmap, Dutt urged VCs of other universities to prepare roadmap of their respective varsities.

Need to develop research culture in CG: CS

Chief secretary Sunil Kumar said emphasised on development of research culture in state. He said the top ranking institutes of the world make their unique identity on the basis of their research works. He informed that the students of private universities too are eligible for government posts. In this connection, the general administration department will soon issue an order, he said.

CG has higher education development rate double of national rate

In the meeting, secretary higher education department RC Sinha informed that higher education development rate of Chhattisgarh (17.9%) was double of national rate (7%).  He further informed majority of the recently appointed 581 lecturers were posted in remote colleges of Bastar and Sarguja divisions. Besides, 900 guest lecturers have been appointed to meet shortage of teaching faculty in colleges located in distant areas, he said. Now, the stipend of guest lecturers have been raised from Rs 15000 per month to Rs 20800 per month, he added.
