Congress has asked government to reduce value added tax (VAT) on
several public utility items including petrol and diesel. The PCC business cell
president Kanhaiyya Agrawal on Tuesday said the government should announce
reduction of VAT on public utility items in its upcoming budget.
“If
the government really wants to give relief to the people from price rise then
it should cut down VAT on petrol and diesel from 25% to 14%,” he said.
Pointing
towards provision of only nine subsidised LPG cylinders every year to a
consumer, Agrawal said the government should promote use of induction cookers
by curtailing VAT on the latter from 14% to 5%.
“While
the government’s revenue will upsurge through this step, the gap between demand
and supply of LPG cylinders will also shrink,” he said.
Similarly,
he said, the government must also slash VAT from 14% t 5% on biscuits,
chocolates, cosmetics, cell phones, luggage bags, mixer grinders, irons and
cutleries.
Agrawal
said the PCC business cell would soon submit a memorandum to chief minister
Raman Singh pertaining to its demands.
