PCI eyes braingain enroute pharma industries in CG

Raipur, January 31, 2013

Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) feels that braindrain of talented lot of pharmacy professionals of Chhattisgarh could only be checked by creating favourable atmosphere for development.

“This is possible through the establishment of large-scale pharma industries which the state lacks. The organised pharma sector would not only create ample job opportunities for the pharmacy students but would also open new vistas of research and development works,” said the PCI chairman Dr B Suresh while interacting with scribes on Thursday.

“The aim of PCI is to encourage pharma investors to establish their drug manufacturing units in Chhattisgarh. For this, the PCI will conduct series of seminars and entrepreneur development programmes in state for pharma professionals,” he said.

“The state has abundant herbal resource and it is high time to make it optimum use in drug industries for the benefit of the mankind. This is how, the state will also develop into a pharma hub of central India,” he said.

Asked whether the drug prices would come down with multinational pharma industries commencing their manufacturing units in state, Suresh said it could happen to a certain extent if the government agrees to give tax waivers and other benefits to pharma industries.

When pointed towards scarcity of drug information centres (DICs) in state, he said the PCI would hold talks with medical and pharmacy colleges to go beyond education and step in to service sector by opening DICs in their respective localities to create awareness about medicines.

The Chhattisgarh Pharmacy College Association (CPCA) along with PCI demand establishment of special economic zone (SEZ) for pharma sector in the state.
