Raipur, January 18, 2013

Several YC activists including organisation’s state head Uttam Vasudev, Amit Jogi and Yogesh Tiwari were arrested by police while they were marching towards chief minister Raman Singh’s residence in protest of Kanker rape incident on Friday noon. The police fired teargas and water canons and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the YC activists when they clashed with cops and tried to climb barricades to move ahead after being stopped at Mahila Thana chowk.

The YC members first gathered at former CM Ajit Jogi’s residence in the morning and then reached Congress Bhawan in the form of a rally that was addressed by senior organisational members.

Terming Kanker incident inhuman and shocking, Vasudev said it was shame that the tribal girls were raped by government employees at government girls’ hostel. He said rape incidents had increased in the state under BJP regime.

Jogi in his address said the state was deeply offended by physical abuse of the tribal girls. He said the BJP government had completely failed to protest females and have lost public trust. He ridiculed the government for celebrating foundation day of newly-formed districts and ignoring Kanker incident. He also hit at the government for roping in foreigner dancers at Mainpat carnival. He said male employees should not be appointed in girls’ hostels. He demanded compensation of Rs ten lakh each for the rape victims and government job when they would grow-up.

Tiwari said the incumbent government had failed in every department and did not deserve to remain in power. The rally was also addressed by Vinod Tiwari, Asif Memon, Pankaj Singh, Sandeep Sahu, Sunil Kukreja, Ashok Sonwani and Danish Rafeeque.

As the rally reached Mahila Thana chowk, the police stopped it and arrested large number of YC office-bearers who were sloganeering against the government.
