With high power tariff coming into effect from May 1, Congress is planning to gherao the government on the issue. The party is also likely to call state bandh on the issue in the coming days.
According to information, the party, albeit raising the issue during its vada nibhao fortnight, feels that a separate movement should launched against the government on it.
In this connection, PCC president Nandkumar Patel has reportedly talked AICC general secretary and state unit incharge BK Hariprasada during his recent visit. Sources informed that the party was well aware of the problems people would face in managing their monthly budget due to inordinate hike in power tariff and hence it would seek support of common man in its protest as well as state bandh.
The Congress alleges that the government’s claim of huge loss incurred by the transmission company is untrue and its ulterior motive is to shift financial burden on the consumers.
Hariprasada has overtly said that the Congress would expose what the government was trying to hide, i.e. transmission scam.
Earlier, the party has consistently opposed proposal to hike power tariff. The Congress not only raised the issue during the budget session of the Vidhan Sabha but also expressed its objection during the public hearings organised by the power companies on the proposal.
Sources informed that the party would continue raising the issue during its vada nibhao abhiyan (VNA) but would simultaneously organise protest movement at district levels. For this, Patel is likely to issue significant instructions to the party’s frontal organisations including Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, NSUI along with different cells and morchas.
“The Congress will mount pressure on the government to rollback the hiked power tariff as it would only break the backbone of a common man, especially farmers who are already facing financial crisis,” said sources.
Moreover, the party will also raise the issue in the forthcoming monsoon session of the state Assembly.
“The party has always raised burning issues in the Vidhan Sabha. As the power tariff is related to every consumer, the Congress would not let this matter sidelined unless the government takes a decision in favour of people,” sources added.
