Jogi asks govt to rollback hiked power tariff

Raipur, May 14, 2012

Former chief minister Ajit Jogi has asked government to rollback hiked power tariff considering extra financial burden on the consumers. “The Congress strongly opposes hiked power tariff. The Youth Congress has launched civil disobedience movement against the government with demand to rollback increased power tariff. The movement will continue till the government takes decision in favour of the public,” Jogi said.
Notably, the YC’s protest movement is being led by its state president Uttam Vasudev and Amit Jogi. The YC has staged dharna under its movement at Bilaspur, Durg, Mahasamund, Ambikapur and Rajnandgaon in past one and a half month.
“The government is anti-people and its 50% hike in power tariff proves that it deliberately aims to dent consumers’ pockets,” said Jogi and appealed to the public to uproot the ruling BJP in coming Assembly polls.
“The prices of daily-use commodities have increased inordinately under BJP’s regime. Besides, the consumers are compelled to pay heavy taxes and now increased power tariff. Hence, this government should go now,” said Jogi.
“Chhattisgarh was once ‘zero power cut’ state and was projected by the BJP as highest electricity generating state in the country. Then, this government is forced to buy power from other states,” he asked.
He pointed that the farmers had to pay heavy power bills despite government’s promise of free electricity to them for pumps up to five horsepower for irrigation purpose.
“The government has not even spared the poor whom single-point connection has been given as they too had to pay high power bills,” he said.
He held the government responsible for not implementing Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme (RGRES) effectively in villages. “The poor villagers are not getting free electricity under RGRES,” he said.
He indicated that the government’s power generation units were not functioning properly despite receiving Rs 1000 crore from the Centre for power infrastructural development. “This is the reason the frequent power cut problems persists in urban and rural areas of the state,” he said.
He warned that the Congress would launch statewide campaign against the government if it would not rollback hiked power tariff.
