Congress finds more graft cases in Koria, Jashpur

Raipur, November 23, 2011
The Congress has found more graft cases MNREGA and PMGSY works in Koria and Jashpur districts. The Congress monitoring committee, which toured the two districts on November 21 and 22 to oversee the flagship programmes of UPA government, informed that the works carried under MNREGA and PMGSY were largely affected by corruption. The PCC president Nandkumar Patel and CLP leader Ravindra Choubey were also the part of touring team.
The committee chairman Arvind Netam informed that construction works of about 2100 school buildings were pending in the two districts while payments had been done to the contractors.
“There are 45 gram panchayats under Pandrapat development block (Jashpur district). The total population of these gram panchayats is about 22 lakh. Surprisingly, about fifty percent of villages do not have electricity. The roads constructed under PMGSY have vanished,” said Netam.
“The government had approved 150 works in Bagicha development block but only 20 percent of the total fund was meant for labour payment. After learning about Congress monitoring committee’s tour programme, the local administration cancelled all the works in Bagicha block,” Netam added.
The party has decided to probe graft cases in Jashpur and Koria through a committee of the PCC office-bearers. The report would be then forwarded to Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh who will be on Sarguja tour next month on December 17 and 18.
Notably, the Congress had alleged that maximum number of irregularities in MNREGA and PMGSY works prevailed in Sarguja division after the monitoring committee toured the region in October 2011. The party says that scams worth over Rs 300 crore in MNREGA works had been surfaced in Sarguja district in last three years.
