Former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi has held the government responsible for reducing tribal population in the state. “The tribal population was 44 percent of the total population of the state in 2001 but ten years it has reduced to 34 percent according to census 2011. During this period, over one lakh tribal migrated and more than 20000 tribal girls from Raigarh, Jashpur and Sarguja belts became victim of human traffickers. But the government has done nothing to contain tribal population. In fact, it wants further reduction in tribal population like Jharkhand,” Jogi said.
“The Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in his recent state visit had apparently expressed his annoyance over decreasing tribal population and had instructed the government to take initiatives to contain tribal people, but the ruling party does not seem serious towards this issue,” he added.
Condemning the killing of Khursipar village Panchayat sarpanch and Congress leader Ramvishal Dhruv in Mainpur area by Naxal on November 14, Jogi said despite continuous killing of sarpanchs and panchayat members, janpad presidents and members and public representatives the government had not taken any measure to protect them.
He said the MLAs of naxal-hit areas now hesitate in visiting their Assembly areas and have sought protection from the government but the latter put deaf ears to their demands.
“Irked by the government’s indifferent attitude and its reluctance to provide security to him the Jashpur legislator Jageshwar Ram Bhagat has categorically said that the government would be responsible if would become naxal target. But the government is still silent which proves that it is incapable in dealing naxalism,” Jogi said.
