Government fails to frame effective labour policy: Cong

Raipur, November 19, 2011

Congress has flayed the government for not framing effective labour policy to contain migrating labourers from state. ‘Labourer migration is a serious problem but the BJP government is non-serious towards it,” said PCC vice president, Baijnath Chandrakar former state unit head president Dhanendra Sahu, chairman of PCC media cell Shailesh Nitin Trivedi, party spokesperson Sushil Anand Shukla and others on Saturday.
“It is surprising that the government remained busy in signing pacts with industrialists to establish power plant companies, providing them land, water and other facilities but completely ignored its own people who depend on daily work,” the Congress leaders said.
“The labourers are not even getting jobs in works being carried out under Central schemes like MNREGA and PMGSY. Every year, the government receives huge fund under different Central schemes but it fail to provide jobs to the labourers in that proportion,” they said.
The Congress leaders said over four lakh labourers migrated to other states in the recent past. “The government deserves the blame for not providing employment to its own people. Contrarily, the outsiders are getting edge over the locals in industries which have been established in various parts of the state. Before commencing their operations, these industries had promised to the locals that they would create ample job opportunities for them,” the Congmen said.
“The condition of the state labourers who have migrated to Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, etc is grim as they are being exploited by their employers or contractors. Several cases regarding harassment of Chhattisgarhi labourers occur across the country every year, however only some come to limelight. One such incident had flashed in the media sometime back in which the contractor had taken hostage of about 63 Chhattisgarhi labourers. The government has not taken any measure to prevent harassment of state labourers which reveals its impassive face as well,” the Congress leaders said.
