Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Ramvichar Netam briefed about his department’s works to Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh prior to commencement of the latter’s two-day Bastar tour which began on Thursday. Netam’s gesture is seen as government’s attempts to convince the union minister that corruption charge against it in MNREGA and PMGSY works was nothing but mere canard. Later, when Ramesh left for Bastar, Netam accompanied him as a ministerial representative from government.
Netam visited Rajbhavan on Thursday morning and informed him about the works being carried out under MNREGA and PMGSY. Netam said the government had constructed stop and check dams in several areas under MNREGA to enhance irrigation facilities.
He said the farmers were engaged in professional paddy production method as they get better returns in terms of MSP during procurement. Besides, the farmers also produce maize at large scale, Netam added.
Ramesh appreciated the government’s paddy procurement process and said Chhattisgarh had always been major paddy producer in the country. Notably, the state produces ten percent of the total paddy produced by the country.
The union minister informed Netam that the Centre had selected sixty districts across the nation including ten from Chhattisgarh for rural development under its integrated work plan. For effective implementation of rural development works, the Centre will also appoint three advisors in each district. These advisors will follow Collector’s directives. Ramesh asked Netam to suggest suitable candidates for advisor posts.
He also expressed his concern over rising naxal violence in the state. However, he praised the state police for upholding its spirit despite adverse condition in naxal-hit areas. The union minister also discussed with Netam about nine new districts of the state.
