CG tops in liquor intake, Choubey slams govt

Raipur, August 10, 2012
Leader of opposition at state Assembly Ravindra Choubey on Friday flayed the government for failing to check illegal sale of liquor that eventually put Chhattisgarh on top of highest liquor consuming states in the country according to report of Annual Health Survey (AHS) which was conducted by Union Health and Family Welfare ministry.
“This is unfortunate. The government has completely failed to prevent illegal sale of liquor in rural pockets despite its tall claims regarding closure of liquor shops,” Choubey said indicating that the Congress had always alleged of rise in illegal liquor sale in villages but the government produced fake figures to decline all charges.
“The report further clarifies that the government has no control on the liquor mafias,” he added.
“According to survey report, over 31 percent males of Chhattisgarh consume liquor which exposes the government’s excise policy,” he said.
“Moreover, the survey has also revealed that the state government’s Bharat Mata Vahini constituted to expedite its anti-liquor campaign failed to achieve its objectives as there has been a marked rise in liquor consumption by females in the state. Surprisingly, Chhattisgarh is on third position among highest liquor consuming females in the country,” he said.
He asked the government to pose seriousness towards the AHS report and take measures to rid people from liquor addiction and state from liquor mafias.
