Congress on Monday alleged that the state government had tempered farmers’ suicidal figures as police informed National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) that no farmer killed self in 2011.
“This is ridiculous. About 12 farmers committed suicide in 2011 just 30 kilometer away from the capital city in Abhanpur. The Abhanpur police had sent the report to the police headquarters. Similarly, the Balodabazar police had lodged cases suicide of about 25 farmers. Many more farmers committed suicide in different parts of the state in same year. How come all the figures are suddenly vanished,” asked former PCC president Dhanendra Sahu and chief Congress spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi.
They pointed that 7777 suicidal cases were registered by the police in five years. “The average suicidal rate in Chhattisgarh is 26.5%, double than the country’s rate which is 11.2%. Chhattisgarh’s suicidal rate will be highest if the rates of Pondicherry, Andaman & Nicobar and Sikkim are put aside,” they said.
“When the Congress started raising issue of farmers’ suicide across the state, the government came into action and tempered the figures. For this, the government arm-twisted the police officials threatening them of pressing in naxal belts,” they charged demanding high level probe into the matter.
