Poll candidate: Balodabazar Congmen for priority to locals

Raipur, August 16, 2013

Claims and objection over ticket distribution in Congress began even before finalisation of candidates with partymen from Balodabazar assembly constituency protesting candidature of Rajendra Tiwari from the area.

In this connection, DCC Balodabazar president Janakram Verma, Sunil Maheshwari, Vidya Bhushan Shukla, Rajesh Nayak, Purushottam Sahu, Seema Verma, Tulsi Verma, Sharda Soni and Shailesh Nitin Trivedi met PCC president Charandas Mahant and CLP leader Ravindra Choubey separately on Friday and said ticket should be given to a local candidate, not an outsider like Rajendra Tiwari.

In 2008 VS polls, two times MLA from Congress Ganesh Shankar Bajpayee lost to BJP candidate Laxmi Baghel by 5182 votes in Balodabazar VS area.

Notably, state Congress election committee has received about 2500 applications for 90 Vidhan Sabha seats. Majority of the applications belong to locals who claim to have done ample works in their area in past five years or so to be projected as poll candidate. Meanwhile, there are slew of applicants who have shown interest in contesting polls from other VS areas than theirs.

The poll committee, in its recent first meeting, has already decided to send three to five names from each VS area to high command so that appropriate candidate could easily be selected.

Now, in wake of protest from Balodabazar Congmen, the party fears that it would see the repeat of such episodes in future when tickets would be given to outsiders in other VS areas.
