Terming ruling party’s claims of doling out rice at low rate to poor as false, Congress on Tuesday said it was actually the union government that had taken care of the impoverished section and made such arrangement by providing ample funds to state government.
“In past five years, the Central share of rice subsidy is 12 time to that of state. As compared to Centre’s subsidy of Rs 25 on one kg rice, the state’s contribution is Rs two. In five years, the Centre has gives subsidy of Rs 540 crore to Chhattisgarh, while the latter has shelled out only Rs 45 crore,” said Congress spokesperson Ghanshyam Raju Tiwari.
“During 2009 general elections, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) had promised that it would provide meals at low rate to poor. When the UPA came to power again, it prepared draft for food security bill in January 2011. The Chhattisgarh’s BJP government immediately copied the draft and hastily passed state’s food security bills in Vidhan Sabha. Evidently, it did this to get back public trust and mandate,” he added.
He said the state BJP government should follow UPA government and fulfill its promises made during 2008 assembly polls like Rs 270 paddy bonus every year and free electricity for irrigation to farmers and regularisation of Shikshakarmis.
