Eye camp incident: Choubey seeks action against guilty docs

Raipur, October 19, 2011

Terming the Balod eye camp incident biggest taint on the medical world, the CLP leader Ravindra Choubey on Wednesday wrote a letter to the Chief Minister Raman Singh and sought stern action against the guilty doctors. “Several patients lost their eyesight and three died due to negligent attitude of the doctors in the camp. The act is unpardonable and the guilty doctors should be spared,” Choubey said.
He alleged that the senor officials of the Health department were not taking the entire episode seriously. “The senior officials are trying to save the doctors present in the camp,” he charged.
“The government organises health camps in the rural belts just for the sake of formality. In these camps, none of the patients get benefited. The senior doctors always keep themselves away from such camps. The department does not even bother whether the equipment used in the camps are standardised or not,” Choubey alleged further. He said the government doctors were losing credibility continuously.
Demanding FIR against guilty doctors, Choubey said the government should immediately provide Rs ten lakh each to the families of the patients who died after cataract operation and Rs five lakh each to those who lost their eyesight. Besides, he said, the compensation package should also include government service to at least one family member of the patients who died and lifetime pension to those who lost their eyesight.
