Terming Health Minister Amar Agrawal ‘nalayak’ (incompetent) in the aftermath of Balod eye camp incident, PCC president Nandkumar Patel demanded from Chief Minister Raman Singh to sack him immediately. “Agrawal gives prime importance to – Revenue and Commercial Tax departments and ignores Health department. Consequently, a number of scams surfaced in the Health department in the recent past. The officials in the department are reckless and hence the incidents like Balod eye camps occur,” Patel said.
The CLP leader Ravindra Choubey said over fifty patients lost their eyesight and four died after cataract operation but the government remained insensitive.
Condemning the contradictory statements issued by Agrawal and his department’s officials, Choubey said, “The officials say the patients died of infection while the minister terms it the case of heart failure. Certainly, no one is ready to take responsibility. After all, whose fault is it? Sometimes back, similar case occurred in Bhagalpur (Bihar) but the Balod eye camp incident eclipsed it. Why the government is hell-bent on in acquiring top rank in corruption, poor medical services, etc?”
Both Patel and Choubey demanded stern action against the guilty doctors. “We have gathered evidence about what went wrong in the eye camp. While majority of the cataract operations were done by the trainee doctors, some were even done by laboratory technicians. Besides, the equipment used were substandard. The government should rather file a case against the doctors under section 304 of IPC,” they said.
They demanded adequate compensation for the victims. “The government must provide Rs ten lakh each to the families of the patients who died and Rs five lakh each to those who lost their eyesight. In addition, at least one family member of the patients who died must get government service and a provision of lifetime pension should be made for those who lost their eyesight,” they said.
