15 die of diarrhoea in Gariyaband: Jogi

Raipur, October 22, 2012

Senior Congress legislator Ajit Jogi on Monday informed about diarrhoea outbreak in a couple of tribal-populated villages of Gariyaband district and consequently death toll in the region had reached to 15 in last 40 days.

“The condition has aggravated in village Amamoura and adjoining villages where dwell the Kamar and Bhunjiya people – the tribals who are on verge of extinction. These people are drinking contaminated and high iron-content water, a major reason for diarrhoea outbreak,” Jogi said.

He asked the local administration to increase the compensation slab from Rs 2000 to Rs 10 lakh for survivors of every deceased terming the announced sum as ‘paltry and insufficient’.

He informed that village Amamoura is located on a hill, some 30 km away from Gariyaband-Mainpur road. “When Gariyaband Collector and SP learnt about my Amammoura visit, they suggested me not to go there terming the region infested by naxals. Still, when I reached there, I discovered that neither the local machinery nor the politicos had visited them. In fact, I too reached the area quite late,” he said.

He said when he talked to Amammoura sarpanch Prithviraj Sori the latter informed him that there were about ten hand pumps in the village, but the water coming out from them were polluted.

Jogi said the state government should take stock of the situation in village Amammoura and adjoining villages and must provide radical facilities including water, road, electricity, education, health etc there.

In this connection, he said, he would also meet Governor and President of India.

Road not built even in 32 years

Jogi said the road project (35-40 km long), which started some 32 years back, was still incomplete. “Of late, the state government had sanctioned Rs 9 crore for the road project. Rs 4 crore was paid to contractors. However, only 1-2 km road has been constructed,” he added.

He demanded probe into the matter by Vidhan Sabha’s all-party committee and stern action against guilty officials and contractors.

Global investors’ meet to divert attention from coal scam

Jogi said Chief Minister Raman Singh was organising global investors’ meet during Rajyotsav in November to divert attention of the public from coal scam. He said the allegation of Rs 4000 crore coal scam on Singh was very serious and nothing can divert public attention from it.

He also ridiculed the CM for inviting global investors pointing that if he wanted to do that then there was certainly no need to oppose foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail.

When indicated about demand of tribal CM in BJP, Jogi said the saffron party had several senior leaders who could take decision on such demands but in Congress, only Sonia Gandhi can take such decision.
