Jogi to CM: Cancel Monnet’s benami land deals in Raigarh

Raipur, October 16, 2012

Senior Congress legislator Ajit Jogi has demanded cancellation of benami land deals by Monnet Ispat and Energy Limited (MIEL) in Raigarh district. In this connection, he sent a letter to Chief Minister Raman Singh on Tuesday and demanded to cancel registration of all the lands acquired by the MIEL under conspiracy from tribals.

Jogi wrote that he learnt about the matter when a delegation of tribals met him during his recent Raigarh visit. He informed that the MIEL acquired lands from tribals at very low rate.

“The MIEL acquired about 10.291 hectare land in village Naharpali from tribals. It registered the land on the name of one Harish Chandra Netam (resident village Saranda) who also belonged to tribal community. Thereafter, it did construction works on Netam’s land and using it since then. Hence, this land deal becomes benami and now it’s the government’s responsibility to cancel the registration,” Jogi said.

He pointed that the MIEL had also acquired lands in village Salihabhatha on Netam’s name in similar fashion. He said he also received complaint from tribals of village Singhanpur that their 27.873 hectare land was being acquired illegally by the industrialists.

“These are just a couple of examples pertaining to illegal acquisition of tribal lands in Raigarh district on the name of industrialisation. The tribals are fast becoming landless. The government should ensure that the poor tribals may not become landless at hands of industrialists,” he said.
