Govt quaffing health funds, ignoring patients: Congress

Raipur, October 03, 2012

Sharply reacting over a woman’s death after her tubectomy at government health centre in Bagbahra, Congress on Wednesday alleged that the government was more engrossed in quaffing health funds flown from Centre instead of providing quality treatment to patients.

“In last one year, the Centre has provided Rs 505.21 crore under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and Rs 330.24 crore under Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) to the state. Unfortunately, the government is aiming to withdraw the entire fund to gulp it instead of making provision of at par treatment facilities for the patients,” said Congress spokesperson Sushil Anand Shukla.

“For government, patients are mere headcounts to achieve the target which is evident from the woman’s demise in Bagbahra on October 1 and another death after tubectomy in Kawardha recently. It is actually playing with the women’s health on the name of family welfare programme,” he added.

“Although the government health centres lack basic medical facilities like medicines, equipment, etc, target of each centre has been fixed. According to given norms, a doctor cannot conduct more than 20-25 surgeries, provided basic medical facilities exist. Strangely, the doctors are conducting 60-70 operations in ill-facilitated health centres,” he said.

Pointing towards 138 tubectomy operations conducted in four hours by one doctor in a government health camp at Daundilohara (Balod) recently, Shukla said the government was completely negligent and indifferent towards women’s health.

“Earlier, the government had organised health camps Balod, Durg, Kawardha and Rajnandgaon to conduct cataract operations to achieve the given target, but the results were awful as over 60 patients lost their eyesight while five died after undergoing surgeries in these camps,” he said.

“The government has become impassive while Chief Minister and Health Minister are least bothered about public health,” he added.
