Govt lacks political will to deal malnutrition: Cong

Raipur, October 12, 2012

Reacting over recent demise of six-year-old girl due to malnutrition in Potacabin ashram at village Karli (Dantewada district), the PCC president Nandkumar Patel and CLP leader Ravindra Choubey on Friday said that Raman Singh government lacked political will to deal malnutrition. “About 68 percent of children in state are malnourished that shows how ignorant is the government towards health of mothers and kids,” they said.

“We are concerned over rising child mortality rate in Sarguja and Bastar divisions. In Ambikapur district hospital, 465 children died due to malnourishment in three years (2010 – 174 deaths, 2011 – 133 deaths and from January to June 2012 – 158),” they said.

“The Centre has launched campaign for child protection and to check malnutrition under its National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Janani Suraksha Yojna (JSY) and Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). In 2010-11, Centre provided Rs 480.03 crore under Mid-day Meal Scheme, Rs 330.24 crore under ICDS and Rs 505.21 crore under NRHM to Chhattisgarh, however the government failed to check malnutrition,” they said.

“ICDS is one of the major schemes to prevent malnutrition but unfortunately it has become potential source of corruption in Chhattisgarh,” they added.

“The Aanganbadi centres do not receive nutritious meals for several months. The condition in remote rural pockets is worse. Let the CM create hype about development in the state but the stark reality is the state government has failed to develop basic infrastructure and resources for children’s health and their physical development,” they said.
