BJP’s agitation against price rise mere pretense: Cong

The Congress has alleged that the BJP’s agitation against price rise was not real but mere pretense and it rather intended to sully the image of Congress-led UPA government at the Centre. “If the BJP really wants to give relief to the common man then it should first reduce various taxes in the states where it is in power,” said the state Congress Sewa Dal chief organiser Ashok Raj Ahuja, DCC president Inderchand Dhariwal and other party leaders on Friday.
“After recent hike in prices of diesel and LPG, the Congress-ruled states immediately reduced the taxes but no such measures were taken in BJP-ruled states,” he said.
Ahuja pointed out that the value added tax (VAT) of daily use commodities was much high in Chhattisgarh as compared to the Congress-governed states and said Chief Minister Raman Singh seemed reluctant in giving relief to the people by reducing taxes.
“The VAT on petrol and diesel is 25 percent while that on television and refrigerator is 14 percent. It is really unfortunate that the government does want to understand that people use petrol or diesel on daily basis while buy television or refrigerator only when required. If it will reduce VAT on petroleum products then the rates of petrol and diesel would reduce by Rs 10-12 and LPG by Rs 50,” Ahuja said.
