Fish farming a potential business in CG: Mahant


Raipur, December 26, 2011

Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Charandas Mahant has said that fish farming was a potential business in the state as it had still not been widely adopted by the farmers due to lack of knowledge. Mahant’s words came while he was reviewing the preparations of three-day Matsya Mahotsava to be organised by Government of India (GOI) at BTI ground in the state capital on January 27, 28 and 29, 2012. The meeting was attended by senior officials of state Fishery department.
“The objective of organising Matsya Mahotsava is to inform the farmers about the latest technology of fish farming. Besides, the Centre also encourages the farmers to adopt fish farming business,” Mahant said.
According to information, ten organisations affiliated to Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) would participate in Matsya Mahotsava. Besides, the Fishery departments of Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and other states would also put their stalls in the fest.
The GOI has also invited private companies which deals with items related to fish farming including fish food, medicines, nets, etc to participate in Matsya Mahotsava. The officials of state Fishery department informed that the cooperative societies would provide different varieties of fishes to the farmers at economical rates during the fest.
