Opposition to move no confidence motion, Choubey informs Speaker

Raipur, December 13, 2011

The opposition will move no confidence motion at Vidhan Sabha in its winter session beginning from December 15. The leader of the opposition Ravindra Choubey has formally informed about it to state Assembly Speaker Dharamlal Kaushik. However, considering numeric strength of the ruling (49) and opposition parties (Congress – 39, BSP – 2) the government is unlikely to fall.
Choubey intimated Kaushik about no confidence motion on December 12. Now according to parliamentary rules, Kaushik is bound to hold discussions on no confidence motion within first ten days of the session. Since the date of discussion and its time limit is not being fixed by the VS executive committee, it is Kaushik who would have to take the final decision.
Sources informed that the government had two alternatives on no confidence motion – either to accept the no confidence motion and deprive the opposition from other issues or to hold the discussion on December 22 or 23 after tabling supplementary budget and different Bills.
According to information, the key ministers of the ruling party have opted for the first option as they do not want to face the opposition’s attack again after answering their queries on different issues the entire week.
