YC stir on high petrol, cement prices on Dec 23, 28

Raipur, December 13, 2011

The Youth Congress (YC) will launch offensive against the state government on high petrol and cement prices on December 23 and 28. A decision in this regard was taken during the meeting convened by YC state president Uttam Vasudev at Congress Bhawan on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by the organisation’s office-bearers.
“We discussed about future activities of the organisation, especially on our protest movements against the government on December 23 and 28,” said Vasudev after the meeting.
He informed that the YC will take out cycle rally in all the Lok Sabha constituencies on December 23 with its demand from the state government to cut down 15 percent value added tax (VAT) imposed on petrol. The YC members will also gherao Collectors of their district after cycle rally. “If the government really wants to give relief to the common man from high petrol prices then it should quickly fulfill our demand and curtail VAT on petrol,” Vasudev said.
The next movement of the YC would be against skyrocketing cement prices. The YC will stage dharna in three phases and the first would be organised at Vidhan Sabha-level on December 28. The subsequent phases of the dharna would be staged at Lok Sabha level and then in front of cement manufacturing plants in the state. The dates of second and third phase of the dharna would be declared after December 28.
Vasudev said the cement prices in 2003 were Rs 110 per bag while now had shot up to Rs 260 per bag. “High cement prices have decelerated construction works in the state. People with less income and dreaming to construct their own are horrified by the cement prices,” Vasudev said.
He further informed that the YC had obtained several evidences regarding graft cases in the governmental schemes through RTIs. “The teams of YC office-bearers would conduct raids in different parts of the state and disclose the corruption cases,” he said.
