Sahu expresses concern over farmers’ woes

Raipur, December 13, 2011

Former PCC president Dhanendra Sahu has expressed grave concern over aggravating condition of farmers of the state as majority of their crops damaged this year either due to flood, scarce water, duplicate fertilisers or substandard pesticides. In this connection, he submitted a memorandum to Governor Shekhar Dutt on Tuesday.
Sahu also demanded Rs ten lakh compensation for the family members of farmer Siyaram Yadav from village Girola (Abhanpur development block) who committed suicide when he failed to clear his debts due to less crop production.
Sahu held the officials of Water Resources Department (WRD) responsible for not providing sufficient irrigation water to the farmers of Girola in spite of the entire belt falling under country’s major lift irrigation project area. He also targeted the government for not checking rising sale of substandard pesticides and duplicate fertilisers.
“Yadav was a landless farmer. He was farming on rented agricultural lands. But neither he got adequate irrigation water nor the pesticides he used in the fields could save his crops. Consequently, he could produce only six sacks of paddy in three acres of lands,” Sahu said.
“It is an irony that frustrated Yadav consumed the same pesticide he had used in his fields and died. He is survived by his spouse and three kids who are in deep financial crunch and unable to clear his debts. The government should show generosity and compensate them,” he said.
Sahu said the condition of the farmers across the state was even worse but the government seemed unmoved by their problems.
