Raipur, December 01
The Centre launched Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban
Renewal Mission (JNNURM) projects to organise the urban areas and provide all
the basic facilities considering huge population flow towards urban areas.
However, it did not get anticipated results from the JNNURM works. The words
were expressed by Professor CK Koshi from CEPT University Gujarat during the
first day of the two-day capacity building workshop for municipal officials at
RMC head office on Thursday.
“Considering low success rate of JNNURM works, the
Centre decided to train the officials of the civic bodies to make them more
efficient at work,” Koshi said.
“Fifty percent of the national population will switch
to urban areas by 2030. Hence, the Centre wants the civic bodies to focus on
urban governance. The effort is to prevent urban areas to turn into concrete
jungles and ensure organised provision of potable water, public transportation,
sanitation, underground drainage, solid waste management, etc,” he said.
Another expert from CEPT University Gujarat Dr Anil
Kumar Rai informed that the workshop would cover nine subjects – urban
management, finance management, planning and development, planning and
implementation, planning and management, IT application, institutional
strengthening, personality development and management capacity. “All these
subjects are significant for urban governance,” he said.
On the occasion, Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak felt that the
workshop was the most appropriate platform for capacity development of the
municipal officials. She urged the officials to seriously go through the
workshop sessions to implement the idea and tips of the experts in the field
for better outcomes.
The RMC Commissioner Taran Prakash Sinha said the
Centre’s decision to train municipal officials through workshops was a
welcoming move and efforts would surely bring expected results in future. He
urged the RMC officials to take benefit of the workshop.
