Terming Kanker rape incident equally appalling as Delhi gangrape case, national president of Mahila Congress Anita Verma demanded judicial inquiry into the matter.
“This was as inhuman a case as Delhi incident and the rapists should definitely be hanged,” she said while interacting with scribes at Congress Bhawan Raipur after taking stock of the situation in girls’ hostel at village Jhaliyamari under Narharpur nagar panchayat (Kanker district) on Thursday evening.
She said the girls lived in dejected condition in the hostel. “It is an ill-facilitated hostel where 40 odd girls were compelled to accommodate in two rooms. Three male staff – a Shikshakarmi, cook and watchman exploited the innocent girls physically. Of course, the three were mentally sick. It was really a deplorable incident,” she added.
Indicating towards uterus-removal case and other women abuse cases in past in the state, Verma said Chhattisgarh was constituted to with an objective to bring development in tribal region but unfortunately the tribal people were living in pathetic condition.
“The Centre provides ample fund for development of tribal community under its various schemes, but the state government is diverting the money,” she said.
She said the government must take the matter seriously and promptly take action against rapists. “We do not want to politicise this matter and simply want justice for the rape victims,” she added.
She also felt that the elected female representatives in state needed to be more aware pertaining to women-oriented issues. “The women-folk in every block should be made aware of the government schemes launched for their development,” she said.
