CM’s claim of zero power cut in state false: Mahant

Raipur, August 30, 2013

Raipur, Aug 30: PCC chief Charandas Mahant on Friday said chief minister Raman Singh’s claim of zero power cut condition in state was false as undeclared power cuts continue in both urban and rural pockets on daily basis.

“The condition in rural areas is worse. The villagers are infuriated by frequent power cuts and sporadically gheraoing the electricity offices to mark their protest,” he said.

“The BJP government has also betrayed farmers whom it promised of giving free electricity to operate 5 HP irrigation pump. Though it is claiming to provide free electricity to farmers up to 7500 units, the latter have to pay heavy power bills every month due to imposition of additional charges like meter rent, fixed charges, etc. Moreover, the power company is prompt enough to cut power line of the farmers who fail to pay their bills timely,” he said.

He flayed the government for imposing double tax to the tune of Rs 252.63 crore on power consumers. “The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) too has objected over double tax being taken from consumers. The government must immediately return the double tax amount to consumers,” he said.

He further pointed that then Congress government of undivided Madhya Pradesh had started giving single-point connection to the impoverished class gratis, but the present BJP government in Chhattisgarh had started recovering bills from them.

“The BPL families presently get free electricity up to 30 units, but on further power consumption, they have to pay inordinate power bills. The government is adopting double standards towards poor who would express their ire while casting vote in assembly elections,” he added.
