Mahant seeks clarification from CM on BALCO case

Raipur, September 21, 2013

PCC president Charandas Mahant on Saturday sought clarification from chief minister Raman Singh pertaining to BALCO land acquisition case.

“He should tell on what grounds his cabinet legalised BALCO’s illegal works. He must also explain why the cabinet lent permission to BALCO to get the lands diverted without completing requisite formalities,” said Mahant.

BALCO has reportedly fringed environmental norms during its land acquisition process for its 1200 MW power plant.

“It is mandatory to complete all the formalities before using a forest land and commencing construction works on it. The Supreme Court has banned construction and other works on forest lands. Neither the local civic body, i.e. Korba municipal corporation has given any permission regarding construction works, nor the town and country planning department has approved the layout of BALCO. Despite this, the state cabinet did not hesitate in lending permission of diversion to BACLO,” he added.

He alleged that the government obliged BACLO management ahead of assembly elections because it intended to aimed take major benefit from it in coming days.

He said if the government had made its mindset to clear all hurdles for BALCO then why it stalled approval on pretext of norms and deceived unemployed youth who are waiting desperately for the power plant to commence.
